Persentile Calculation

The question of what the ideal height and weight of babies should be is frequently asked. Almost every parent wondersif my baby’s development is normal. There is aheight – weight percentile table or percentile chart to monitor the physical development of babies. So, what does percentile mean and what is the calculation of percentile based on? Our topic is Perscentile Calculation!

What is a Perscentile Ruler?

A percentile chart is also calleda growth curve . Theideal height and weight ratios for babies are determined according to the month of the baby, or the growth chart for babies. Slow or faster than expected development is undesirable and it is important to provide the necessary intervention early to solve the problems the baby will experience in the future. Racial data is also taken into account in the percentile chart, which is determined according to how old the baby is.

What should be the height and weight of babies?

For babies, a growth curve is prepared for each month and gender-specific and often racial characteristics are assessed. The percentages on this curve are important to understand whether the baby’s development is physically adequate. theanswers to questions such as how tall should a 3-month-old baby be / what should a 6-month-old baby boy weigh / what should a 12-month-old baby girl weigh can be learned by looking at the percentile curve in question. Thegrowth curve in infants is necessary to follow the development of the baby or child and to learn the ideal height and weight ratio in children and infants.

To monitor ideal physical development in infants, height, weight and head circumference are measured. These three data are then evaluated with the help of a percentile table.

How to Track Perspentile / How Often to Look at the Growth Curve?

It is recommended to look at the growth curve for babies once a month. However, the percentile curve can also be checked once every three months for the baby’s development. Thus, if there is something wrong, early precautions can be taken with the guidance of a physician.

What do the ratios on the Perscentile Curve mean?

The figures in the percentile table should be evaluated as follows:

  • a percentile value between 0 and 10: Indicates that the baby’s development in the relevant area (head circumference-height-weight, which are usually proportional to each other) is too far behind for the age range in question.
  • percentile between 10 and 25: Again, this indicates that the baby’s development in the relevant area is at a low level.
  • 25 to 75 percentile values: The baby’s development is considered normal compared to other babies of the same age and gender.
  • between 75 and 90 percentile values: It is considered high. For example, if the baby’s weight is in the 90th percentile, it means that the baby’s weight is too much for his/her age and gender and a nutritional plan should be made with the advice of a physician.
  • 90-100 percentile value: When this value is observed, there is an overdevelopment and a physician should be consulted.

Now, let’s share the table for the specific growth curve for baby girls and baby boys:

How should you read the Perscentile Chart?

When reading the table, find the row according to how old your baby is and the gender of your baby.

Then compare your baby’s height, weight and head circumference measurements with the ranges on the list. Then find out where your baby falls in the percentile indicated by the letter “p”.

However, you can also measure your baby’s height, weight and head circumference regularly every month and evaluate it by looking at the percentile chart. If the percentiles are above 90 or below 25, consult a pediatrician. Ask aboutthe importance of breast milk in the fight against obesity .
